The Barcelona Metro is a key part of the city and metropolitan area's transportation network. With an extensive and well-connected system, it provides residents and tourists with a fast and efficient way to travel around the city and its surroundings. Below is a complete guide on how it works, fare zones, types of passes, and prices.
How does the Barcelona Metro work?
The Barcelona Metro network consists of 12 lines covering approximately 170 kilometers and 189 stations. These lines are operated by two main entities:
- Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB): Manages lines L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, L9, L10, and L11.
- Ferrocarriles de la Generalidad de Cataluña (FGC): Operates lines L6, L7, L8, and L12.
Metro service generally starts at 5:00 AM and ends around midnight (12:00 AM), although schedules may vary depending on the line and the day of the week.

Fare zones
Barcelona’s integrated fare system is divided into six concentric fare zones, numbered from 1 to 6, each covering different municipalities in the metropolitan area. Most tourist attractions and points of interest are located in Zone 1, but it's important to know which zone your starting point and destination are in to purchase the correct transportation ticket.
