Milan the city of fashion, the most glamorous city in Italy and one of the most visited. It is a very large and industrialized city, perfect for living or a getaway at any time of the year.

How to get to Milan?

‍

Milan is the financial center of Italy and the second most important city in the country. Therefore, getting to it will not be a problem for anyone. Now, once you land at any of its three airports, you must know how to get to the city center.

‍

Milan has three airports: Milan Malpensa International Airport, Milan Linate International Airport and Orio al Serio International Airport, actually located in Bergamo.

‍

  • Bus:
    ‍Malpensa: You have the option of moving from the airport to the Milan train station using the different bus services. There are two companies that offer these services, Malpensa Shuttle and Autostradale/Malpensa Bus Express. The price of this journey usually costs approximately €10.
    ‍Linate: The ATM 73 and X73 bus lines connect Linate Airport with Piazza San Babila, located a few steps from the Duomo. The duration of the journey is 30 minutes and the cost is €1.50. It is important to know that, in order to get on this bus, you must previously purchase the ticket at the kiosks, bars or tobacconists inside the airport. There is also a private company that offers this service, Starfly. This bus travels to Milan central train station, the trip duration is 30 minutes and the cost is €5.
    ‍Orio al Serio (Bergamo): The bus is the most comfortable means of transport to get from Orio al Serio Airport to the center of Milan. There are different private companies that provide this service, such as Terravision, Orioshuttle or Autostradale.

  • Train:
    ‍
    Malpensa: There is a train service, called Malpensa Express, that connects the airport with the Cardona station, in the heart of the city. This trip lasts approximately 40 minutes and costs 13€.
    ‍Orio al Serio (Bergamo): An alternative to private bus companies is to take the public transport bus, which takes you from the airport to the Bergamo train station. Once at Bergamo station, you can take a regional train to Milan. This last journey lasts 50 minutes and usually costs around €5.50.

  • Taxi:
    ‍
    Malpensa: The taxi is another of the options available to get to the city center, although the most expensive of all. Taxis are parked at gate 6 of Terminal 1, or at gate 4 of Terminal 2.
    ‍Linate: The price of the taxi service will depend on the schedule, traffic, final destination, etc. It is not advisable to take a taxi during rush hour (from 07:00 to 09:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00).
    ‍Orio al Serio (Bergamo): The taxi takes 1 hour to take us to the center of Milan. The rate to be applied will vary depending on traffic or time of the day.

What is the cost of living in Milan?

‍

To live well in Milan, you will need approximately €1,400 per month. The rent for a furnished studio in a normal area of ​​the city is around €800 per month, to which you will have to add around another €100 for water, electricity and electricity costs. To give you an idea, a short consultation with a private doctor in Milan is around €80, a dinner for two in a neighborhood bar is usually around €40 and a half-liter mug of beer will cost you around €5. How to move around Milan?

‍

Although Milan is not a very large city and can be easily explored on foot, if you are staying in an area a little far from the center, you will probably need to use public transport.

‍

  • Metro: Although it only has 4 lines, the Milan metro is the largest in Italy. Tickets can be purchased at the metro stops, at kiosks and tobacconists, although it is advisable to purchase a pass if you are going to use the metro regularly. The activity hours are from 06:00 to 00:30.

  • Bus: Milan has more than 80 day bus lines and 15 night bus lines. Night bus tickets can be purchased directly on the bus, while day bus tickets must be purchased in advance at metro stops, kiosks or tobacconists.

  • Tram: Milan has 18 tram lines through which trams numbered 1 to 33 pass. In the same way as with the metro, tickets can be purchased at the metro stops themselves, at kiosks and at tobacconists. The tram's operating hours are from 05:00 to 2:30.

The fare system used by ATM Milano is divided into 9 Fare Zones. Depending on the areas you use, the ticket or pass will cost more or less.

It must be taken into account that you can carry luggage that does not exceed 50cm. If it is between 50-90cm you will need an additional ticket. Luggage exceeding 90cm is not permitted.
